The term “primitives” was first used to describe artists of the Middle Ages, prior to Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael: Cimabue, Fra Angelico, Uccello, or in France, Enguerrand Quarton or Fouquet, to cite a few examples. The so-called “primitive” works, held in contempt during the entire Renaissance period, were rediscovered during the 19th century.
